Viña Leyda stands out as one of Chile’s best producers, receiving outstanding scores in Tim Atkin’s 2019 Report

The latest report from Tim Atkin (MW) entitled, The Special Report on Chile 2019, has been released following his three week-long visit to the country in December. During his visit, the British critic was able to taste over 1,200 wines from 218 Chilean wineries.

“In his article, the Master of Wine emphasized how “he has never felt so positive about the quality of Chilean wine”, and on this occasion he placed Viña Leyda – pioneer of the valley with the same name – among a list of 20 wineries in the “First Growth” category, that is to say among the Chile’s Best Producers.”

In addition, the expert awarded incredible scores to eight wines from the Viña Leyda portfolio and on top of this, two of them were chosen as “Wine of the Year” in their respective categories, clearly signaling the winery’s excellence in producing cool coastal-climate wines.

"Leyda Lot 21 Pinot Noir 2017 was selected by Atkin as “Wine of the Year” in the Pinot Noir Category. He gave it a score of 95 points and described it as a wine which reflects how “vintage after vintage, Lot 21 is always among the best Pinots in Chile, sourced from granite soils with a high percentage of calcium carbonate. Subtly wooded, with 15% whole bunches adding structure, this is a dense, savory, sappy red with the concentration to age further in bottle”.

"Meanwhile, Leyda Single Vineyard Las Brisas Pinot Noir 2017 was awarded 93 points and was described as a wine which “comes from red granitic soils and tends to be deep in colour for a Pinot Noir as well as a little ferrous. This is a textured, intense red with very subtle wood, violet, and rose petal aromas and plenty of underlying concentration”.

"Similarly, Leyda Lot 4 Sauvignon Blanc 2017 became “Wine of the Year” in the Sauvignon Blanc category. The critic awarded the wine 95 points and described it as a “very pale in color, with notes of oyster shell, stony minerality, and subtle vanilla underpinned by acidity. Lot 4 ages brilliantly too”.

Leyda Single Vineyard Garuma Sauvignon Blanc 2018 in turn scored 92 points and was highlighted as “an impressive example of what Viviana Navarrete describes as an exceptional vintage”.

"Also scoring 95 points, was Leyda Lot 8 Syrah 2015, which was described as follows: “this youthful, assertive, deeply colored Syrah is made entirely with the 470 clone. Spicy, smoky, sappy, and intense, it has notes of incense, blackberry and black olive and a meaty, ageworthy finish”.

Leyda Lot 5 Chardonnay 2017 stood out with 93 points as well as Leyda Single Vineyard Falaris Hill Chardonnay 2017, with 90 points.

"These excellent scores and acknowledgements for Viña Leyda’s wines illustrate the freshness, minerality, and vitality stemming from one of the closest vineyards to the Pacific Ocean."
