Tomás Rivera named Chile’s Viticulturist of the Year by Tim Atkin
Tomás Rivera named Chile’s Viticulturist of the Year by Tim Atkin
We are incredibly proud to share that world-renowned Master of Wine, Tim Atkin has chosen Viña Leyda’s Tomás Rivera as his Viticulturist of the Year for 2022.
This news comes following the publication of Tim Atkin’s latest report into the Chilean viticultural industry. Atkin’s reports are highly influential around the world, taking into account specific geographical and climatic factors to assess the best of Chilean wine. Given the high standards to which Atkin holds his reports, it comes as no surprise that he has chosen Leyda’s own Viticulturist, Tomás Rivera as his Viticulturist of the Year.
Tomás’ future success in winegrowing was evident from an early age– as a child he spent much of his time in the Chilean countryside in San Clemente, Talca, before studying at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where he specialized in fruit production. Rivera joined our vineyard in 2012 and has been a champion of sustainability and micro-terroirs ever since. Notable innovations of his include using natural resources like the wind to avoid the use of harsh chemicals. He is also part of our “360 Sustainable Program”, carrying out detailed studies into our soil, and helping Leyda to achieve the absolute best expression of every grape whilst honoring our sustainable commitment.
In Leyda, Tomás has worked alongside our Chief Winemaker, Viviana Navarrete – who was also named “Winemaker of the Year” by Tim Atkin in 2020– for the past ten years. Together, the two have become known as the “Golden Duo”, sharing their expertise with each other, and achieving more than any other team in the country. Under their leadership, Leyda has seen consistent, excellent results, allowing us to maintain our place as Chile’s most awarded coastal winery, and receive such high praise as this from important wine authorities like Tim Atkin.
